Our kindergarten children have an excellent and rare opportunity to be in a classic, carefully-designed and enriched Montessori environment that offers lessons in math, language, writing, reading, science and various cultural areas. In such an environment, the children experiment with concrete materials that help them understand abstract concepts such as how big is a thousand, and how many tens are there in a hundred. This is where the children get to manipulate concrete materials rather than textbooks and worksheets, and thus develop a strong foundation for their lifetime learning. Our kindergarten children are enthusiastic readers! Their faces shine with pride and joy after reading a book. They look forward to doing their comprehension exercises and coloring their beautiful pictures. They rush to the pencil holders to grab a bunch of pencils and color a picture or write cursive letters and sometimes their whole names in cursive.
We follow through with the Montessori philosophy during the summer camp by allowing the children to have a regular morning in the Montessori classroom. This happens during the first halves of June, July and August. During the second halves of June, July and August, we offer two week summer long camp sessions. For an hour to two in the morning, we have a scheduled activity, visitor’s demonstration or field trip. Our children have done regular baking, painted homemade tipis, made s’mores, ridden horses, hosted guests, and been to various field trips (such as the Piney Run Nature Center, Buppert’s Farm, Sweet Simplicity, etc.), among much, much more. After the summer morning activity is through, the children eat a healthy snack. Then, they get dressed in their swim suits, take their towels and head outside to enjoy the sprinkler. Every week, we pick a day to barbecue homemade hamburgers. The smell of barbecue together with the beach towels and swim suits create a beach ambiance that is fun for everybody including adults. By the time the outdoor play time is over, the children are ready to eat lunch. After lunch, the younger ones get on their cots to nap while the older ones enjoy working with their Montessori Materials.
